The supervisor of a renovation project has admitted to ignoring safety protocols for asbestos abatement.

Kenneth Horan, 38, of Pittsford admitted on Monday that he ignored mandated safety procedures for the removal of asbestos. He pleaded guilty in federal court to a violation of federal Clean Air standards.

Horan was the supervisor at an Irondequoit renovation project. According to court records, Horan hired a man to remove asbestos piping wrap in the basement of the building, but he was not a licensed asbestos remover.

Horan was fully aware that the project required the removal of friable asbestos, and has been charged with violating federal safety standards for proper asbestos removal.

When asbestos is not removed properly, the mineral’s fibers can become airborne and breathed in by unsuspecting victims. This can lead to a number of illnesses, including the fatal mesothelioma cancer.
