GLOUCESTER, UK – An improper disposal of asbestos was uncovered after a council contractor disregarded the proper safety rules and buried the mineral on a city nature reserve.

There are strict guidelines for the disposal of asbestos, and the contractor, an Enterprise employee, buried it in the ground at Alney Island. Luckily, the mineral was dug up and the worker was fired for his negligence and disregard of safety measures.

“I am disappointed an employee feels cutting corners is the way to do things. I hope measures are put in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” said Barry Leach, of Gloucester City Centre Community Partnership.

Workers from Enterprise were called to the site in July to handle an asbestos cleanup project. There were roof tiles laden with asbestos that needed to be disposed of properly by sending the contaminated materials to licensed dealers. It is an offense to bury asbestos under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

If asbestos is not handled properly, the mineral may break apart and its fibers may be inhaled by victims, leading to several diseases like mesothelioma cancer. Mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest and there is currently no cure for it.

“This is completely out of character, nothing like this has happened before,” said Keith Rowe, general manager at Enterprise. “Procedures were not followed. It should have been bagged, collected, skipped and taken to a licensed asbestos disposal point.”

“It is unfortunate they acted in this way,” Rowe went on to say. “We have high standards and expertise in cleaning up and in Health and Safety. Once I knew what had happened we worked very swiftly to deal with the issue. We took action internally against the individuals for working outside the organisation’s process.”

Luckily, the matter was handled quickly and the asbestos-laden tiles were removed from the ground and properly disposed. Being exposed to asbestos is usually the result of someone’s negligence. If you or a loved one is suffering with mesothelioma, turn to a leading mesothelioma lawyer right away.
