Riverside, New Jersey – The New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice is conducting an investigation into the improper handling and disposal of asbestos at a site, which was formerly location of Zurbrugg Hospital in Riverside.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) discovered the presence of asbestos, a hazardous mineral, at the demolition site over seven months ago, but there were no attempts to handle the removal of the mineral.

Peter Aseltine, spokesperson for the Division of Criminal Justice, explained that following the demolition, the DEP discovered bags of asbestos – among other toxic materials – at the site. Having loose asbestos materials is extremely dangerous, especially because the site is close to a residential neighborhood.

When asbestos fibers are breathed in by victims, several diseases my result, including mesothelioma cancer. Mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest cavities. The disease is extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat because it can take up to 50 years to develop, and even then, symptoms may not even manifest. Sadly, there is no cure for mesothelioma cancer, despite leading treatments like chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
Air testing was done close to the residential location but no hazards were found. However, residents remain concerned.

“Everything is exposed, and nothing is being done. It just looks awful,” said Rebecca Eiler, who lives near the site. “…the longer it goes on, the more worried we get.”
