Elbert County, Colorado – Denver residents are showing concern over a clean-up project of asbestos-contaminated materials.

Residents living near a trash-compactor landfill that was once used for the disposal of asbestos-laden building materials are expressing concerns that a proposed clean-up at the site will spread asbestos dust and place hundreds of lives at risk of being exposed to the harmful mineral.

The compactor site, which is also home to an abandoned Titan I missile silo, was closed in the 1970s. However, residents still drop their trash there, where it is then compacted and moved to another landfill.

The county gave Backhoe Services, a company that deconstructs missile silos, the approval to test the soil in the area, but the company began excavating instead. Residents who have been monitoring the project claim that Backhoe has been moving dirt on at least 5 acres of the property, which most likely contains asbestos-contaminated materials.

However, county officials say that the asbestos at the site is intact, posing no threat to those who live nearby. They argue that the plan is to remove any materials that contain asbestos and then cover the entire area with clean dirt.

But residents are not assuaged. If at any point, the solid asbestos is disturbed, fibers can become airborne and those in the vicinity of it can breathe it in and possibly develop one of several asbestos-related diseases, such as mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a fatal cancer that affects the lungs, heart and chest cavities. It can take up to 50 years to manifest, so it is extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat. Worst of all, some patients never even exhibit symptoms, so they never get the medical attention they deserve.

Even though there are treatments for mesothelioma, like surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, there is still no cure for the asbestos-caused cancer.
“I’m concerned more asbestos could come up,” said resident Jill Duvall. “And how did the excavation become so massive? Wasn’t anyone from the county paying any attention to them?”
