FORT WORTH, TX – Five years after an asbestos demolition project in Fort Worth, Texas, was approved, the Environmental Protection Agency has admitted that construction workers may not have been adequately protected from the hazardous mineral.

The demolition project on a building in Fort Worth’s Oak Hollow apartment complex began in 2007. During the project, workers came in close proximity to asbestos-contaminated structures and sprayed the building with a wet formula to remove the asbestos before the construction.

Although concern had expressed regarding the safety of the method, it wasn’t until December 14th, 2011 that the U.S Inspector General Arthur A. Elkins contacted the EPA with a formal complaint, claiming the method violated Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations.

Workers were onsite without protective equipment, and post-demolition tests “demonstrated asbestos fibers releases.”
Being exposed to asbestos fibers can lead to serious illnesses, including mesothelioma, a rare cancer that affects the lung, heart and chest cavities.

Even though it is less likely that asbestos fibers will become airborne when wet demolition methods are used, the EPA has yet to prove that this procedure is “protective of human health.”

The Fort Worth project was the first urban test of the wet method.
