United Kingdom – Carpenter and handyman, William Rogers, has been filed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after it was revealed that he removed partitioned walls that contained asbestos in January.

According to authorities, Rogers had wrongly assumed he was handling asbestos cement, which does not require hiring special contractors to remove it. Rogers performed the job himself, leading he and the tenant of the building (who has chosen to remain anonymous) to become exposed to asbestos dust.

The incident came to light after a licensed asbestos removal contractor, who was working on a separate project in the building, noticed pieces of asbestos outside and notified HSE.

The landlord had informed Rogers that there was asbestos in the walls, yet he went ahead with the refurbishing project, putting not only his life at risk, but that of the tenant.

Rogers pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 5 and Regulation 11(1)(a) of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006. He was fined £600 and also ordered to pay £1,799 in costs.

Being exposed to asbestos fibers can lead to several diseases, including mesothelioma, a rare cancer that affects the lungs, heart and chest cavities. Mesothelioma is one of the most difficult cancers to both treat and diagnose because it can take up to 50 years from initial asbestos exposure to develop, and when it does, symptoms are usually mild and don’t concern the victim enough to seek medical attention.
