MILAN, ITALY – MolMed S.P.A. has announced that they will expand their trial of the anticancer drug NGR-hTNF in the United States. MolMed will expand Phase III of their trial to the United States. The drug NGR-hTNF is being researched as a treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma. The first patient to be treated will be in New York.
Mesothelioma is a fatal cancer connected with the exposure of asbestos. It affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest cavities, and can take over 50 years to develop, so many patients don’t even realize they are sick and never seek medical help.
Although there are some treatments for mesothelioma, like chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, unfortunately, there is currently no cure for it. The trial is already underway in Europe and plans to involve over 40 centers worldwide. The results are expected in 2013. The start of Phase III in the US follows IND clearance from the FDA.
“We are very satisfied with the progress of patient recruitment in this pivotal trial, now involving some of the most important clinical centres in both Europe and the United States,†said MolMed’s chairman and CEO, Claudio Bordignon. “This expansion is a very important step in the clinical development plan of NGR-hTNF, which could provide a new therapeutic option for patients affected by malignant mesothelioma, a severe form of cancer linked to the exposure to asbestos, for which NGR-hTNF has been granted Orphan Drug Designation in the European Union and in the United States. The trial is intended to assess the clinical efficacy of our investigational drug as second-line treatment for patients progressing after chemotherapy with pemetrexed, the only approved drug currently available for this indication.”
