The Ministry of Environment reported that the number of people suffering from malignant mesothelioma is expected to peak in 2045.

In comparing the trends of asbestos use and mesothelioma patients in Korea, the Netherlands and Japan, the ministry estimated that the number of patients in Korea suffering from asbestos-related disease is expected to rise until 2045, given the fact that it can take anywhere between 10 to 50 years for asbestos-related diseases to manifest.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest cavities. The cancer is extremely rare and very difficult to diagnose and treat. Since it can take so long to develop – and symptoms can be relatively mild – many victims suffer with mesothelioma without even realizing it and by the time they seek medical attention, it is usually too late.

The report explained that the number of mesothelioma patients at medical facilities rose from 61 in 1996 to 152 in 2007. The number of deaths caused by asbestos exposure also rose from 24 in 2001 to 57 in 2006.

“It seems that Korea has just started seeing a surge in the number of victims to asbestos exposure. In Japan, the increase started in early 2000 and is expected to peak around 2030. In the Netherlands, industrialization using the cancer-causing material began earlier than the other two countries. The prevalence is forecast to rise to the highest level in 2017,” stated the report.

A new law regulating the use of asbestos in Korea is set to launch next April. The National Institute of Environment Research expects that the law will prevent up to 20,000 asbestos-related deaths over the next 50 years. The Dutch and Japanese governments already have regulations in place.

“The asbestos regulation is expected to give society benefits worth up to 10.3 trillion won. The nation has to pay the cost (of removing asbestos) before getting benefits, but considering that asbestos damage will peak in 30 years, the regulation from next year has more merits than demerits,” stated the institute in a report.
