A New Jersey recycling company has been fined half a million dollars in fines after being involved in the illegal disposal of the hazardous mineral asbestos.

According to a report by the U.S. Department of Justice, Eagle Recycling, based in North Bergen, allegedly helped get rid of 8,000 tons of asbestos-laden construction waste in upstate New York in 2006 near the Mohawk River.

Earlier this year, Eagle Recycling had pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the Clean Air Act and has been sentenced to pay $500,000 in fines and $70,000 in cleanup and restitution costs.

Whenever asbestos is removed, it must be done with the utmost care and by skilled professionals. If asbestos fibers become airborne, they may be inhaled by innocent bystanders, leading to several illnesses, including mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest cavities. It is extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat because not only can the cancer take up to 50 years to develop, but symptoms can be relatively benign, not leading the victim to seek medical attention.

Roughly 3,500 cases of mesothelioma are discovered each year in the U.S. alone but many more go unnoticed. Although mesothelioma can be treated with chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, there is currently no cure for the asbestos-related disease.

Most mesothelioma victims developed the disease as a result of working in asbestos-contaminated environments. Their employers either did not warn them of the presence of asbestos or failed to provide them with adequate safety gear. Although mesothelioma victims have been severely wronged, help is currently available to all victims and their loved ones. Turn to a leading mesothelioma lawyer today to fight for your rights.
