The National Cancer Institute is sponsoring a new clinical trial that might mean a breakthrough for patients suffering with mesothelioma. The trial will test a new drug and is said to be helpful to mesothelioma patients that are unresponsive to chemotherapy.

The trial will be conducted at the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and is led by Dr. Raffit Hassan. The drug in question is IMC-A12, or cixutumumab, a human antibody. The trial is a Phase II study, which means that the medicine has shown promise in preclinical testing and has already been tested in humans.

The treatment is given intravenously once every 21 days to mesothelioma patients. The study will be open to adults with mesothelioma tumors that cannot be fully removed with surgery or reduced with chemotherapy.

IMC-A12 works to stop certain receptors that sit on the surface of a mesothelioma cell in order to prevent the cancer’s growth and survival.
For additional information on the study, contact the cancer institute’s referral office, at 1-888-NCI-1937. The study’s identifying tag at ClinicalTrials.gov is NCT01160458.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer associated with the exposure of the mineral asbestos. The cancer affects the lining of the lungs, chest and heart and can take up to 50 years to manifest. Symptoms can be so mild sometimes that patients do not obtain the medical care they need in order to stop the cancer from getting worse. Sadly, although there are treatments for mesothelioma, there is currently no cure.
