In an effort to level off a shortage with vital-drugs, the President has issued an order that will make drugs more affordable, following a shortage of critical drugs.
There are currently 84 drugs listed on the FDA’s Current Drug Shortages List, including Cisplatin, which is a drug used in treatment for mesothelioma patients. Another drug, Alimta, which is not on the shortage list but is extremely expensive (estimated $1,700 per vial), could become more affordable once the Executive Order comes into effect.
This marks the first time since 1985 that a presidential executive order has been passed that affects the FDA.
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure that affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest cavities. There are roughly 3,500 new cases of mesothelioma diagnosed each year in the United States alone, but many go untreated because the cancer can take up to 50 years to manifest, and symptoms may never even develop.
Although there are treatments for the cancer, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, they are not enough to win the battle with mesothelioma. Sadly, there is currently no cure for the cancer. Hopefully by making more drugs affordable, better treatments will ensue. However, not everyone has the time to wait for this to happen. Mesothelioma can take a life quickly, so seeking action immediately is critical for survival.
