Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that can affect the lining of the lungs, heart and chest cavities. It is extremely difficult to both treat and diagnose, and even with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, prognosis is grim.
Leading scientists have been trying to come up with new ways to fight mesothelioma for years, and now, a team of researchers have uncovered promising results from a study on the asbestos-related cancer. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston have devised a more reliable way to conduct tests to treat mesothelioma. By grafting human malignant mesothelioma cells into the peritoneal cavities of lab mice, the scientists were able to simulate mesothelioma.
The mesothelioma cells were then allowed to take hold for 14 days and then the tumors were surgically removed by laparotomy. The study on the mice allowed the researchers to test different types of treatments for the asbestos-caused cancer. “Cytoreductive surgery in mice was feasible and reproducible, and incurred less than 5% operative mortality,†wrote the researchers in a summary of their experiment for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
Before the researchers closed the mice’s surgical wounds, they treated the cavity with 10 mg of the chemotherapy drug paclitaxel loaded onto tiny, expandable nanoparticles. The purpose of the nanoparticles is to find and deliver the paclitaxel into any mesothelioma cells that are left behind after surgery. The survival rate of the mice was examined over the next 90 days.
Although the cytoreductive surgery alone did not improve survival rates, the addition of paclitaxel via the nanoparticles “significantly increased survival†when compared with the mice that were not treated. The researchers concluded that the drug “merits further evaluation for intracavitary drug delivery following the surgical resection of malignant mesothelioma.†If you or a loved one are suffering with mesothelioma, there is help available for you to seek justice for the pain and suffering you have endured after being exposed to asbestos.
