HAWAII – The University of Hawaii Cancer Center has received $4.3 million in grants from the National Cancer Institute for research on different types of cancers, including mesothelioma.

Haining Yang received a five-year grant for $1.5 million to study the correlation between asbestos exposure and malignant mesothelioma in order to help scientists develop better treatment and prevention methods for the deadly disease. Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer connected with the exposure of asbestos. While intact, the mineral generally poses no threat, but when the fibers break apart and airborne, they may become lodged in the victim’s lungs, leading the cancer to spread into the heart and chest cavities.

Mesothelioma is so difficult to both diagnose and treat because it can take decades for the cancer to develop and manifest symptoms, and unfortunately, many patients don’t get the treatment they need in time. Furthermore, sometimes patients do get tested but the symptoms mimic those of other diseases and they still do not get the proper treatment.

Mesothelioma must be treated within 12-18 months from initial development in order for the victim to hope for successful treatment. However, even with the best chemotherapy, radiation and surgical treatments available, there is still no cure for mesothelioma and prognosis is grim.

Other researchers were also allotted a portion of the grant for their respective studies, including Iona Cheng of the Cancer Center’s Epidemiology Program, who received a four-year grant for $1.4 million to study the impact of obesity, lifestyle behaviors, and genetic predisposition on breast, prostate and colo-rectal cancer among African-Americans and Latinos. Patricia Lorenzo received also received a five-year, $1.4 million grant to study the role of a certain protein that causes the skin to transform and lead to squamous cell carcinoma.
